There are many board gamers who can speak to their own stories of dealing with varying forms of discrimination and unpleasant environments. As such BoardGameArena should strive to be as inclusive as possible to attract all kinds of board gamers. And from a business perspective, more board gamers means more board games and more money for BGA, so everyone wins.
Add Gender Options
To that note, BGA needs to add more gender options. At the very least, BGA should add the following gender options:

Nonbinary

Other/write your own
Add Pronoun Options
Furthermore, BGA should also add pronoun options because not everyone uses the pronouns typically associated with the gender they choose. As such, BGA should add at least these options:

She/her/hers

They/them/theirs

He/him/his

Custom

Subject pronoun (she/they/he equivalent):

Object pronoun (her/them/him equivalent):

Possessive pronoun (hers/theirs/his equivalent):

Roll-istor an danevelloù bog
It shouldn't have to be said, but there it is.
Not only are some female, but some are non-binary and some are fluid. And there are a lot more non male Gamers out there than you may realize.
If you don't wish to program in multiple pronoun options, I suggest that all pronouns be simply replaced with the emerging non-object, nonspecific gender pronouns "they, their, them, theirs."
This language is becoming used in official government documents and many other places, all over the English-speaking world.
Seems like that would be the simplest solution.
AND it would make the board more likely to grow, as it would not only please the many, many people already on the board who are hoping for this, but would ALSO prevent the board from discouraging, literally turning away, those who find themselves being(not so) subtly socially erased & excluded .
PLEASE make this simple, but effective change to improve the inclusive and welcoming potential of the onboard gaming culture.
Thanks! :)
The preferences wording has been changed for more clarity.
I personally think adding more pronoun options in-game would be too much work for the developers to code, and I think it's great that gender-neutral pronouns are an option.
But I agree that the gender options you can choose in your profile are lacking. merlin is right. 'Do not display' is for people like me who don't want the whole internet to know their gender and/or don't think it matters enough to put it online. A 'Nonbinary' option would be for nonbinary people who DO want to share their gender with the internet. It could come with an icon like the male and female options. And changing the way the profile settings work would probably be a lot less work than changing the coding of the games.
