You have opted to play "original rules", which say (regard the last "note:"):

Round after round is played. If you have to turn over your last life preser-
ver, you’re still in the game. Only once you have to turn over a life pre-
server that you no longer have, you are eliminated for the rest of the stage.
Take your weather cards (cards in your hand) and place them face down
next to your accumulated tide level cards, which you also turn over so
that they’re all facing down. Note: when a player is out of the game for
the rest of the stage, the player who now has the highest tide level card
must turn over one of his life preservers.

Oh forget it, just saw that the game has been launched with an option that allows this. Is this something in an old version of Turn the Tide ? Because I don't see this in the rules, where I looked hard for this.

Perhaps a message stating in the logs that there is a chain reaction would be nice, then. Because it is easy not to understand what "initial" option is.

you are right, only the german publishers seem to have this rules (also in their english version). Gamewright seem not to have that rule. But in the options, the default is the modified rule, and the rule is explained under the options
