Usually action buttons are not placed in the game area beside the board, but in the status bar after the action description ("You must play" currently in Shogi). I suggest to place the "Resign" button there, and with a "gray" style as it's not a frequent action.

Placing it to the side also mirrors one of the two ways to resign traditionally in shogi (placing your hand over your piece stand).
And the red color makes it easy to see it's a "dangerous" action.
I agree however this would make it more consistent with other games. Also it'd be easier to only show the button when it's your turn, and free some space for the board.
Yes, if it was blue (the standard action button color) which is why I'm suggesting to use the gray action button styling (which is used on BGA for less usual / less important actions.
> Placing it to the side also mirrors one of the two ways to resign traditionally in shogi (placing your hand over your piece stand).
Ok, I didn't know that. It's an interesting point, but only for experts and even for them I'm not sure that it translates so clearly with a button.
> And the red color makes it easy to see it's a "dangerous" action.
On such an action button it's important to use a confirm dialog (like in many games having pass actions or actions ending the turn). I didn't test it to check - so maybe there already is such a confirmation - but in my opinion this answers the "dangerous" aspect, which is also clear from the term "Resign".
> Also it'd be easier to only show the button when it's your turn, and free some space for the board.
Yes, that would also be good :)
